Les Yeux du Monde is honored to present in conjunction with the Look 3 Festival of the Photograph Syria before the Storm, an exhibition of photographs by Ed Kashi from 3 June through 3 July 2016 and a presentation by Don Belt, Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur on Sunday 19 June at 4 p.m. at CitySpace. On assignment for National Geographic magazine, photojournalist Ed Kashi and staff writer Don Belt visited Syria many times over the past two decades, reporting on subjects ranging from water scarcity and geopolitical conflict to Syria's embattled Arab Christians. Shortly before the Arab Spring and the spark that lit the Syrian civil war, Ed and Don spent months traveling across Syria to assess life in that country for a National Geographic feature story. Their assignment, which took them from little-seen corners of the country to the office of President Bashar al Assad, resulted in one of the most penetrating and comprehensive magazine coverages of Syria ever published, grounded in the history and human geography of this ancient crossroads. This story featured in the November 2009 National Geographic provides the backdrop for the exhibition of photographs at LYdM and the subject of the presentation on June 19 at 4 p.m. at the Old Metropolitan Hall in Charlottesville that will be the Closing of the Look3 Festival of the photograph. In this hour-long presentation featuring Ed's photographs, Kashi and Belt will share their stories of Syria on the eve of war, followed by a special presentation of "Syria's Lost Generation" (2014), an award-winning documentary film about Syrian refugees co-produced by Ed and his wife, Julie Winokur. Les Yeux du Monde presents Les Yeux du Monde is excited to present Susan Mcalister: Views from The Garden from 21 August to 20 September 2015. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday, August 21 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. Susan Mcalister grew up among rural Virginia's views and vistas and credits them with her attraction to places "where tamed sophistication intersects with wild, tangled nature." Her lush, sweeping landscapes hover between the imagined and the real, abstraction and representation. Her medium is oil but she often layers this with unexpected materials such as wax, gold leaf, marble dust, graphite or even dirt from the land in these paintings. "What starts as a place just beyond the fence line unfolds into a moment in a metaphorical paradise," writes Mcalister. Ranging in size from small 12 x 12" to monumental 60 x 60", the paintings in this exhibition do indeed transport the viewer out of one's mundane confines into seemingly sacred paradisiacal spaces. Susan McAlister received her BA from Davidson College and currently resides in Charlotte NC. She has studied alongside numerous acclaimed and professional artists including Herb Jackson and Eric Aho. Her works in the recent exhibition SCOPE: The Southern Landscape won a merit award from Dr. Will Smith, Chief Curator of the Columbia Museum of Art. Her work is in many important private and public collections, including most recently the University of Virginia Medical Center's new lobby. May 2015
Les Yeux du Monde presents @ IMVA Salon Les Yeux du Monde is excited to partner with Investment Management of Virginia (IMVA) at 200 Sixth Street in Charlottesville to host a special exhibition and First Friday Opening of Ann Lyne: Highlights in Gesture and Line. Ann Lyne, a venerated Virginia artist since 1959, has shown her paintings and drawings in museums such as the Smithsonian, the Mint Museum in Charlotte and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Her accolades include grants and fellowships from the National Endowment of Arts, the Virginia Museum, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, among others. She has her MFA from American University in Washington DC, and studied studio art, art history, and aesthetics at Queens College, Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and the Virginia Commonwealth University. In her oil paintings and drawings of equestrian, floral and Virginia themes she magisterially melds meticulous observation and line with free gestural brushwork, to create new compositions that draw from great modernist artists from Degas to Matisse and Joan Mitchell and yet are wholly her own new vibrant creations. ----- Baker Gallery at Woodberry Forest School presents Woodberry Forest School is pleased to present Russ Warren: WORKS 1971 - 2015 from March 27 through 3 May 2015. Warren, a professor of art at Davidson College from 1978- 2008, showed widely in this country and abroad in the 1980's in Neo-Expressionist circles. The works of those years were featured in many solo shows with Phyllis Kind Gallery in New York and Chicago and group exhibitions such as the Whitney Biennial (1981) the Venice Biennale (1984) among others. These works, variously referred to as Neo-Expressionist, Funky Figurative or to use Donald Kuspit's term, "Mad Cap Surrealist" are well known through reviews in the major art magazines and exhibition catalogues. Less well known are Warren's Regionalist works of the 1970's which reference his Texas roots and his later totally unique multi-layered paintings initiated in his Mare: A Work in Progress series in the 1990's and continued in his Magic Mountain of 2009 or his recent triptychs and smaller paintings using the livestock marker as a medium. This show will trace the artistic and ideological evolution of Warren's work using major pieces from each decade beginning in 1971 with a collage that reveals his early understanding of Picasso's cubism and Matisse's cut-outs and crisp line. Artistic influences such as Dubuffet, Mexican folk art and Spanish masters from Goya and Velazquez to Picasso are evident but transformed throughout Warren's oeuvre. This is evident in Warren's recent multi-panel paintings based on Picasso's versions of Velazquez's famous painting Las Meninas (1656). They start with these painter's versions but are merged with Warren's signature iconography, such as strong light and shadow, southwestern cacti and the dogs that take a larger than life role. The exhibition is perfect for teaching institutions such as Woodberry Forest and the University of Alabama where it will travel next because one can trace the evolution of an artist very influenced by the history of art, while it also emphasizes his joyous and determined artists' work ethic. Never influenced by painting for the "market", Warren always urged his students just to work every day and try to produce something that "cannot be denied" that "surprises even you when you go into your studio." This show, with its inclusion of a sampling of a vast amount of work from each decade and 4 major triptychs produced in the past three years, along with 18 of the over 100 livestock marker paintings he produced in 2014, reveals Warren adheres to his own advice. The show will be accompanied by a catalogue with color reproductions of the works in the exhibition and other works in museum collections along with an introduction by Davidson College Art Historian Shaw Smith, an interview by University of Alabama Professor of Art and Gallery Director William Dooley and an essay by Art in America Contributing Editor Carter Ratcliff. The show will open at the Baker Gallery at Woodberry Forest School on March 24 and run through 3 May 2015. It will travel to the Sarah Moody Art Gallery at the University of Alabama and run from 29 October through 3 December 2015. October 2014 Les Yeux du Monde presents Les Yeux du Monde is honored to present Anne Slaughter: Connections from 10 October through 16 November with an opening reception on Friday, October 10 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. This is the first exhibition of Slaughter's work since her 2006 retrospective and catalogue Terra Incognita: Forty Years at Second Street Gallery and Les Yeux du Monde. In these new works, the human form appears for the first time in her art and takes center stage. Slaughter admits she was mystified as to why she suddenly felt the deep need to "explore and struggle with the representation even in a semi abstract way, of human forms and their relationships." She writes: "I then realized over many months that what I was trying to do was actually the natural continuation of my former work: the same distressed surfaces, evidence of the passage of time, the fragments of writings, and then, closing the circle of our physical and emotional presence with an evocation of our human figures and how they can relate to each other as much in love and intimacy, as in suffering and loss." Although a local legend, Slaughter is originally from Belgium and her European modernist artistic ancestry is evident in these haunting paintings that bring to mind artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Oskar Kokoschka. The evocative figures in her works floating or emerging from and disappearing into rich empty spaces are moving meditations on our universal human relationships, and our poignant and profound connections to one another. September 2014 Les Yeux du Monde presents Les Yeux du Monde is excited to present Picasso, Lydia and Friends 2014 from 5 September through 5 October 2014. There will be an Opening Reception on Friday, September 5 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Like the first version of this show in 2012 which coincided with the inauguration of the non-profit Lydia Csato Gasman Archives (LCGA) for Picasso and Modern Studies, this show will include prints by Pablo Picasso along with art by the late Lydia Csato Gasman, a renowned Picasso scholar, award winning painter and beloved University of Virginia professor of modern art. It will also include art by "friends" William Bennett, Anne Chesnut, Dean Dass, Sanda Iliescu, David Summers and Russ Warren who share aesthetic, philosophical or personal ties with Gasman and/or Picasso. This show will also be the backdrop for the biannual fundraiser for the non-profit LCGA to take place on September 20, a Banquet for Lydia, modeled after Picasso's famous 1906 Banquet for painter Henri Rousseau. There will be drinks, food, and an auction. Tickets are $100 per person and all proceeds from the event help preserve and publish the groundbreaking scholarship of this charismatic former UVA professor of modern art. March 2014 Les Yeux du Monde presents Les Yeux du Monde presents Trisha Orr: Still Life and Other Subjects from April 3 - May 11, 2014. Trisha Orr received national attention as a painter of still life in the 1990s when Art in America described her as having entered into the ranks of late-century American flower painters . (Yet) delving into (her) work yields a richness and a complexity that are Orrs alone. The earliest of the paintings in this show are from 2008 and represent an evolution of her closely observed, illusionistic style. In more recent paintings, the body/soul series, the objects depicted have been simplified while paint application has become more tactile and expressive. Another aspect of Orrs recent work embodies poems (by her husband, the poet Gregory Orr) that evoke the lyric boldness of graffiti on weathered, urban walls. August 2012 In celebration of the Launch of the Lydia Csato Gasman Archives for Picasso and Modernist Studies Les Yeux du Monde announces the exhibition Opening Reception, Friday 31 August, 5:30 - 7:30 Les Yeux du Monde is excited to present the exhibition Picasso, Lydia and Friends from 31 August to 30 September 2012. There will be an Opening Reception on Friday, August 31 from 5:30 7:30. This exhibition is planned to coincide with the official launch of the non-profit Lydia Csato Gasman Archives for Picasso and Modernist Studies on September 22, 2012. Lydia Gasman was a renowned Picasso scholar and beloved professor of modernist art history at the University of Virginia. An award winning artist in her native Romania, where she was required to paint in the social realist style, she left in 1961 for the United States where she attended Columbia for her doctoral work on Picasso, completing a ground breaking dissertation that was given a book contract by Yale University Press and was cited in Life Magazine. March 2012 Kurt Steger's Burden Boat Project Docks in Charlottesville at Les Yeux du Monde through 25 March 2012 Kurt Steger first conceived of his Burden Boat in response to an invitation to show at Virginia Tech. The campus was still reeling in shock and sorrow from the massacre that had taken place just two years earlier. Steger writes "I felt a compulsion to create an art piece that might help facilitate healing." The burden boat project was born, a twelve-foot vessel made of ceramic and wood with cotton bags filled with hallowed ground from the Virginia Tech campus. It was initiated at the exhibition's opening on September 11, 2009. During the show, people were invited to write their burdens on scraps of paper or send them in by mail or email and place the written burdens into the boat. At the end of the show there was a ceremonial burning and burying of the burdens, personal and collective. December 2011 Les Yeux du Monde and the Amazon Aid Foundation 
The Amazon Aid Foundation, co founded by Sarah DuPont and Dr. David Lutz, and Les Yeux du Monde Gallery are teaming up to present Art and Acres for the Amazon in an attempt to create meaningful Christmas shopping alternatives this season while raising money to help protect the Amazon. There will be a kick off event at Les Yeux du Monde on Tuesday, December 13 from 5 - 8, which will feature art, music, festive holiday fare and libations, and a preview of the trailer to Amazon Gold. There will also be a first glimpse at Dean Dass's earth affirming video The Winter War. The $40 suggested donation covers the price to protect an acre of the Amazon (see www.acrecare.org). Additional acres may be adopted as gifts at the event and throughout the following week, in the hopes of helping the Amazon Aid Foundation meet their goal of having placed 250 acres of the Amazon into protection before the end of the year. A portion of all art sales that evening and through the 23rd will also be donated to the Amazon Aid Foundation. The Dean Dass exhibition, Heaven and Earth, is on view in the main gallery and other art $25 and up will be available. The intent is to offer alternatives and gifts that also give back to our endangered earth. Art and Acres will be available daily from Dec. 14 through the 23rd at Les Yeux du Monde from 1 - 5 p.m. and by appointment. Read more > June 2010 Les Yeux du Monde is pleased to collaborate during the last two weeks of July with the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy to exhibit the paintings of renowned Austrian Composer Wolfgang Seierl, and to host four related events including two concerts and a gallery talk. Download press release (pdf) > Composer, painter and guitarist Wolfgang Seierl was born in 1955 in Vienna, and he is internationally recognized for his accomplishments in all three disciplines. As a visual artist, he has had one-man and group shows in Austria, Germany, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Switzerland, Hungary, Turkey, Japan and the USA. His works appear in numerous public collections, including the Albertina (Vienna); Academy of Fine Arts (Vienna), Niederösterreichisches Landesmuseum (St.Pölten); Museum Carolino Augusteum (Salzburg); Rupertinum (Salzburg); Kunsthaus Nexus, (Saalfelden); the New York Public Library and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. His art has been exhibited in many international art fairs, including Art Basel, Kunst Zürich, Saga Paris, Kunst Wien, Art Multiple Düsseldorf, Art Frankfurt, Art Paris, Art 2 Bodensee, Cologne Fine Art and Art Karlsruhe. December 2008 Les Yeux du Monde presents Les Yeux du Monde is proud to present Clay Witt: The Peaceable Kingdom for its final show of the season and in the current venue, at 500 West Main Street. The exhibition will open on Friday 5 December and run through December 31. There will be a First Friday opening reception with the artist from 5:30 8 p.m. Witt joined the Les Yeux du Monde stable two years ago in a legendary two-person exhibition, Dark Light with his former professor and mentor, Dean Dass. This very popular exhibition highlighted both individual and collaborative works by these two artists who have pioneered new techniques in printmaking and painting in combination with time honored traditions and materials. Since 2006, Witt has been honing and perfecting these techniques and materials to create his latest body of work, which will debut in this exhibition, entitled The Peaceable Kingdom. Witt took the title for the show and for the largest work in the exhibition from a series of nineteenth century American paintings by the Quaker artist Edward Hicks with this subject matter and title. Witt writes, to me, Hicks represents the essential mystical folk artist of our countrys nineteenth century adolescence, an artistic genre to which I feel a great aesthetic affinity. Of the unusual technique Witt employs to create his luminescent works, he writes: While my works may at first glance resemble straightforward paintings, they are in fact expressions of an idiosyncratic technical style that I have developed over the past two decades, one that incorporates intaglio printmaking, collage, gilding, and polished varnish layering into a final product that recalls the visual tropes of religious art as much as it does anything else. He parallels his laborious and time-consuming process (which results in no more than five large paintings a year) with a sort of mystical artistic quest. The resulting paintings are otherworldly, astral, and vibrate somewhere between this world and the next. Most feature images of an eerie naturespindly trees and animals reside together with Biblical and classical references. Witt refers to his final paintings as a self-revealing series of contemporary icons that, while not allied with any particular creed or dogma, do in fact reflect my interest and research into the artistic expressions of religious faith. Witt is currently a Visiting Artist at the University of Virginia. Born in Belgium to a family from Richmond VA, he grew up in England before returning to the United States where he completed his BA in printmaking and sculpture from the University of Virginia and his MFA in painting from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He also received a Fulbright grant to apprentice to a Master Calligrapher in Damascus, Syria in 2001, an experience he considers one of his most significant and influential courses of study. There are several events planned in conjunction with the exhibition in addition to the First Friday Opening, December 5, from 5:30 until 8:00 pm. There will also be a Feast on Art lunch with the artist on Wednesday, December 10 at noon. November 2008 Les Yeux du Monde presents Download press release (pdf) > Les Yeux du Monde is proud to present its third solo show of Annie Harris Massie, Paintings and Drawings from the Landscape from November 4 29, 2008. The show will open on Tuesday, November 4 and run through Saturday, the 29th, with a First Friday opening on November 7 from 5:30 7:30. Landscape painter Annie Harris Massie, a resident of Lynchburg, Virginia, produces beautiful and ephemeral landscapes, drawing on what appears to be a fleeting afterimage to capture the essence of time, place, and space. The use of light in her works is what makes these images remarkablelight is an active player in the scene, dancing across objects and throwing others in shadow. As a result her landscapes remain imbued with a dynamic yet soft quality. |
